McCARTHY, Michael J. F. Catholic Ireland and Protestant Scotland: A Contrast. Edinburgh: Oliphant, Anderson & Ferrier, 1905. 60 pages. McCarthy was an Irish-born catholic barrister who was fiercely critical of the Catholic Church in Ireland. This book is the substance of a speech he delivered in Central Hall, Edinburgh, in 1904. In it he makes reference to how his publications were received in his native land: "Damnation is preached this very day against those who read my books in Ireland, penances are being imposed in the confessionals on those who read them, servants have been known to burn them in the houses of their employers, public institutions are denounced in the priests' press for admitting them to their libraries." Not surprisingly, the book extols the virtues of the Scot and Ulster-Scot and views the relatively backward state of Ireland, not as a difference of race, but of religion, and lays the blame firmly at the door of the Catholic Church.
