ANONYMOUS. The State of the Irish Poor. Dublin: Curry (Dublin University Magazine), 1836 (Volume 7, No.40). 16 pages. A facsimile of the original article in the Dublin University Magazine, 1836, with double-column text. Written in response to the report issued by the commission directed to enquire into the condition of the poor, published in the previous year, the article quotes passages from different parts of the inquiry. Evidence is supplied from Ballina and Burrishoole, County Mayo, Kilfarboy, County Clare, Kilteevan, County Roscommon, Innishannon, County Cork, Drumcliff, County Sligo, Naas, County Kildare, etc. One account begins as follows: "…labourers' widows are generally reduced to beg. On the death of their husbands, they immediately give up their houses, if their husbands held such. They procure their own and their children's food, by begging from door to door, and get their lodgings for nothing among the labourers." The article also touches on the subjects of foundling hospitals, alms-houses, etc.
