Bell was born at Ballycreen in 1864, but moved to Dundee Street off the Shankill Road, Belfast, with his mother when he was ten years old. His working life started off as a bookbinder but subsequently he became a rivetter at the Harland and Wolff shipyard. During his forty years there he used most of his evenings and weekends to pursue his passion for geology, either individually or in the company of The Belfast Naturalists' Field Club. Apart from the main biographical sketch there are a number of other appreciations of the man, one of which is by Rev. W. R. Megaw, Rosetta Manse, Belfast, and from the name on the flyleaf this appears to have been his copy. His name also appears in the list of subscribers to the 'Robert Bell Memorial Fund.'
